I once listened to a quote that said motivation is not what you need, rather you need commitment and disciple.
And I have to say I am beginning to see the wisdom in this phrase. I am the kind of person who gets easily motivated, or as we will say in Nigeria I get gingered easily.
I think this is because I am and was brought up to be compassionate and charitable. So most of my self-motivation comes when I see suffering; I get motivated to do something about it.
But I am also motivated by good leaders/role models, stirring speeches, powerful quotes or inspiring stories.
However, these external sources of motivation can keeping you running for a while but soon your tank will go back to empty, after some time has passed, unless you get another top-up.
On the other hand commitment is a conscious and continued choice even in the face of disinterest, loss of motivation or changes in mindset. For someone who knows what it feels like to loss interest in the things you love because of a health condition, I appreciate the things I am committed to even when I lose motivation.
The list is very short and usually just involves loving my family and working to improve their condition; trying to stay in touch with my friends and maintain relationships; and finally keeping myself away from dark thoughts and adding value to my environment.
My performance in this three areas is not 100% but I always manage to put in effort towards these goals even in the darkest of times.
So yes I agree to commitment and disciple being more important than your level of motivation, as consistency requires you to perform even when you body or mind say you can’t because your spirit or willpower always can.
